Root Canal Therapy Miami - Smiling woman at Miami Modern Dental

Miami dentist explains the process of root canal therapy

There are unexpected situations that may occur in the smile. Sometimes, an abscess may form around a tooth and result in discomfort. Patients may have a severe toothache due to an infection within a tooth’s dental pulp. When issues such as these arise, patients visit the dental team at Miami Modern Dental for a consultation appointment and examination to determine the source of the problem. Sometimes, it requires root canal therapy.

Root canal therapy, also called endodontic therapy, is done to remove the dental pulp from inside of a tooth. The dental pulp is the mass of tissues within a tooth that encompasses the nerves and blood supply. When infected, it can cause extreme pain. By removing the dental pulp through root canal therapy, patients are relieved of discomfort and can maintain the tooth structure. This also eliminates the need for extraction of a tooth.

Root canal therapy starts with local anesthetics to numb the area of treatment. Sedation may also be employed. This may include nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as "laughing gas." Patients are comfortable as the dentist makes a hole in the tooth to access the inner chamber. The dental pulp is removed with special instruments, and then the canals are disinfected to remove bacteria. A material called gutta percha is put into the tooth, and then it is sealed with a composite resin. Depending on the location of the tooth, a dental crown may be fabricated to cover the tooth and give it an extra layer of protection.

Root canal therapy is sometimes necessary for patients to avoid the issues associated with restoring the smile following extractions. Dr. Marlon Pasquier, Sr. and Marlon Pasquier, Jr. believe in maintaining natural teeth whenever possible, and root canal therapy can make this happen. Patients in and around the area of Miami are encouraged to call our team at (786) 338-9228 to make an appointment and discuss the benefits of root canal therapy.
