What causes teeth to become stained and discolored?

One of the most basic reasons for tooth discoloration is aging. Children usually have naturally white teeth. As we age, the color starts to pale on the surface of the teeth. The thickness of the tooth’s enamel becomes much thinner and the result is we can see the underlying layer, or dentin, which is darker. There is no way to stop the aging process, therefore it is expected that a person’s teeth will naturally darken with age.

Constant exposure to pollution in the environment can also aid in the discoloration of your teeth. Even people who maintain good oral hygiene find that their teeth are many shades darker than they used to be.

Smoking and drinking both affect the enamel of your teeth. Dark colored foods and beverages also tend to stain your beautiful pearly whites. With prolonged use; red wine, tea, acidic drinks, and even aerated beverages can cause staining on your teeth. Chewing tobacco and regular to heavy smoking can severely stain teeth. These stains cannot be removed with ordinary brushing. Certain antibiotics taken as a child, or when the mother was pregnant, can also lead to discoloration of teeth.

Some people are very self conscious about their smile due to white spots, dark areas, or yellowing teeth. It can be very embarrassing in certain social situations. Many times, people will hide their teeth by just not smiling, or covering their mouth when speaking. Very conscious of their condition, they may laugh without ever showing their teeth.
