Rest

Most dental implant patients feel extremely well following the procedure. Many feel they are able to resume normal activities within a day or so of their initial treatment. Though discomfort may be mild, we encourage patients to simply listen, and heed what their body is telling them. A little extra rest for a few days could prove extremely beneficial.

Oral hygiene

Following implant surgery, oral hygiene is vitally important. Brushing and flossing are intended not only to clean teeth, but to wash away bacteria that can threaten oral health, causing infection in teeth and gums. Whether you have had a single implant placed or several, it is important to cleanse the area gently so that the number of bacteria in the mouth is kept to a minimum.

Rinsing the mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash may keep bacterial activity low, but may not feel comfortable on treated gum tissue. An alternative rinse of warm salt water is ideal. Salt-water rinses have been encouraged for years for oral issues. This practice, performed as needed, can decrease swelling and soothe irritated tissues.

Diet

Easing back into a full diet is often one of the easiest ways to promote stress-free healing after oral surgery. Have soft foods available, such as yogurt, cottage cheese, pudding, and soup. As gum tissue heals over the implants, harder foods that require more chewing can be gradually added back into your normal diet.

Medication

Most dental implant patients report that post-treatment is so mild it can be handled with over the counter pain reducers. Though tissues may be swollen for a few days, there is typically no real pain felt after implants have been placed. If pain does occur, we encourage patients to contact us.
